It’s easy. Here’s how:

Sample Message
Here is a sample message, but feel free to use your own words:
“My name is _______________ and I live in (your town/city).
“I’m calling to ask that you defund the war in Iraq and refund human needs at home and in Iraq.
“Each day that the U.S. continues to occupy Iraq adds $720 million to the cost of this war, in addition to the terrible human cost. With a looming recession, we need Congress to spend our money wisely.
“Please tell Representative (or Senator) _______________ to vote for a budget resolution and an economic stimulus plan that increases funding for human needs programs. Vote for more money for food stamps, Medicaid, unemployment benefits, and aid to the states to help people meet basic needs and rebuild the economy.
“Please tell the representative to also vote for funding to meet the basic needs of Iraqis and Iraqi refugees, not continued occupation. Meeting these needs is a key step toward ending the violence and bringing about reconciliation in Iraq. It’s time to bring all the troops home now, with no permanent bases left in the country.”
Thank you for making this call! Now, call your two U.S. senators and make sure they get the message too.
Call 1-800-473-6711 again and ask for one of your senators. (If you are not sure who your senators are go to our Congressional Directory for their names, or just tell the operator where you’re from.)
Thanks so much for your calls and your ongoing support for peace. Feel free to share this with your friends and family and help us flood Congress with calls this week.
During the week of April 14, the House Appropriations Committee will consider a bill that could continue funding the Iraq war. The full House of Representatives may consider the bill as soon as April 21.
That week, the House will also be deciding whether to include food stamps, unemployment benefits, state fiscal relief, and other human-needs provisions in a new economic stimulus plan.
In addition, the House and Senate need to pass a budget resolution soon that sets a total funding level for human needs programs for the budget year starting October 1, 2008.
The majority in this country wants to end the war in Iraq and to help people meet their basic needs. They don’t want to fund tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy few at the expense of the common good for all.
It’s time we let Congress hear our voices. Call your senators and representative today, toll-free at 1-800-473-6711.
Peace,
Kenneth Stepp
